Headaches
Not all headaches come from the head. Some are related to the neck (cervicogenic headaches) or to muscle tension, and these can respond well to physiotherapy that addresses neck movement, strength and tension. If your headaches are linked to neck stiffness, desk work or tension, an assessment can help determine whether physiotherapy is likely to help.
Common symptoms
- Headache associated with neck stiffness or pain
- Pain that starts at the base of the skull or neck
- Tension-type tightness around the head
- Headaches aggravated by sustained postures
Common causes
- Neck joint and muscle irritation (cervicogenic)
- Muscle tension related to posture and stress
- Sustained desk or device postures
How physiotherapy helps
We assess your neck and identify whether it's contributing to your headaches. Where it is, treatment combines hands-on techniques with exercises to improve neck movement, strength and tension, plus advice on the daily habits contributing to symptoms. If your headaches don't appear to be neck-related, we'll help direct you to the right care.
General self-care tips
- Add regular movement breaks if you work at a desk
- Address neck tension with gentle movement and relaxation
- Manage stress and sleep, which influence tension headaches
