Ankle & Foot Pain
Ankle and foot pain ranges from acute sprains to overuse problems like Achilles or heel pain. These respond well to a graded loading and rehabilitation programme that restores strength, balance and confidence — and, after a sprain, reduces the risk of it happening again.
Common symptoms
- Pain after rolling or twisting the ankle
- Heel or arch pain, often worst with first steps
- Achilles pain or stiffness, especially in the morning
- Swelling, weakness or reduced balance
Common causes
- Ankle ligament sprains
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Plantar heel pain
- Overuse from a change in activity or footwear
How physiotherapy helps
We assess the injury and your movement, then guide a graded loading and balance programme suited to the stage of recovery. After a sprain, rehabilitation is important to restore strength and control and reduce the high rate of re-injury. For tendon and heel pain, progressive loading is the cornerstone of recovery.
General self-care tips
- After a sprain, gentle early movement usually beats complete rest
- Progress loading gradually for Achilles and heel pain
- Restore balance and strength, not just range of movement
- Return to sport in stages using clear milestones
